2012 North Rebel Review

Apr 14, 2012

Author: SBC Kiteboard / Shane Thompson

Tested in the Head-to-head Surf Category. Voted Best in Class!

Size tested: 10 m
Sizes available: 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 m
Design style: 5-line loaded, 5-strut

The Rebel is North’s freeride surf-oriented kite that not only rips apart any-size surf, but offers ideal freeride performance in any conditions. For 2012, the Rebel remains a five-strut kite with loaded fifth-line bridles. Its short bar stroke, crisp, direct feel and rock-solid stability gave it the range, speed and handling that rivaled the industry’s top designs. Placed in the dedicated wave category for this test, the Rebel captured the highest scores of the group with its smooth power delivery, incredible wind range and the industry’s most polished bar and safety systems. Last season, the Rebel had some incredible low-end power, and this year it added smoother turning, tunable bar pressure, and the most rock-solid canopy we’ve ever experienced. The Rebel has gotten better every year with its water relaunch capability, and it now closes in on the full-bridled designs, as well. Test Team members were impressed with its awesome upwind drive and solid stability as the wind picked up. In fact, the canopy remained solid whether it was diving, pivoting or launching you into the sky. Whether you’re looking to get back into the lineup to catch another epic ride, or want to boost some controlled jumps—hooked or unhooked—the Rebel has the power to take your wave and freeride experience to new levels.

Five-line hassles
The fifth line still has some wishing for the simplicity of the four-line, but its performance will make you forget about the extra set-up time.

“Smooth, smooth, smooth. Zero kite noise transferred to the bar, just perfect positional feedback.”
“Best jumper and smoothest, largest wind range of the kites in the test. It’s an awesome wave kite, but can rival against the top all-terrain models with speed and jumping ability.”
“A kite in a class of its own! Awesome in the waves, smooth, powerful, yet easily de-powered, and cooks upwind to get you back to into the surf.”
