2012 Griffin Argonaut Review

Apr 11, 2012

Author: SBC Kiteboard / Shane Thompson

“Great cruiser and jumper; value-minded freeriders can’t go wrong.”
Size tested: 11.5 m
Sizes available: 4, 7, 9, 10, 11.5, 13.5, 17 m
Design style: 4-line, 4-strut SLE

The Argonaut is Griffin’s answer to easy handling, massive de-power, superb stability and auto-relaunch. This evolved hybrid SLE is not new to the big pull, big range and do-it-all realm; more ideal for the waves or beginners, the Argo had some formidable power delivery and soft, cruising feel to it. This medium-low aspect kite presented its potential as a one-kite quiver that offered testers a useable freeride wind range. With tons of low-end power, stability and control lasted well into the higher winds. The Argonaut backed its claims of instant water relaunch and easy boosting with superior hang time to many of its rivals in this test. It performed well, and would be suited for traveling with your favourite surf stick and twin-tip cruising board to any tropical destination. Freeride and boost or park and slash waves, Griffin’s Argonaut is suitable for beginners to intermediate-advanced cruisers and wave dabblers.

Higher winds: fly the right size
The softer power delivery and huge low-end have some performance detractors: value leaders sometimes have resale value drawbacks.

“Great cruiser and jumper; value-minded freeriders can’t go wrong.”
“The beefy and flat central canopy is stable through gusts, while giving a softer and smooth power delivery. Easy to jump, and even one of my quick picks for progressive boosting.”
