The Epic Renegade 3G is the third-generation model of this three-strut, four-line SLE hybrid. Rather than calling them by their model year, Epic calls them by their generation, which allows them to bring out new technology breakthroughs based on refinements derived from rider input. The Renegade is the definitive workhorse of the Epic kite line. It had performance characteristics that covered a wide range of rider skill level and style, allowing it to sit comfortably in the Freeride All-Terrain category. Overall, its performance was well-rounded, and the Renegade delivered some quick pivotal turns with good arm’s length de-power, and great low-end power range with its flat, deep canopy foil. Great stability and easy handling suited it well to both progressing riders and waveriding specialists. Testers were impressed by the fast water relaunch of the Renegade, and even the largest size rotated quickly off the water. The nine-metre was stable, easy to figure out, and had no oversheeting or back-stall issues to speak of. The wide-bodied central area gave the kite easy jumping capability, and overhead, the kite reacts well to bar input. By trimming the front lines, the Renegade could unhook and pop sufficiently, especially with the larger sizes and in the less-than-pumping winds. The smaller sizes were well-suited to waveriding, with quick pivotal turns and good drift.
Performance consistency The 13-metre had some bridal setting issues, making it more prone to back-stalling, and trickier upwind in lighter winds.
WHAT THE SBC TEST TEAM RIDERS ARE SAYING: “The Renegade relaunched well, had tons of get-up-and-go, with good hang time and boosting.” “Launch and go: the Renegade does everything in a well-rounded way, with quick turning and agile handling.” “Different feel from one size to the next. The 11-metre was great upwind with smooth pull, while the 13-metre needed trimming and was trickier upwind.”
