Sky Solbach Oregon Coast Setup

Mar 29, 2011

Author: as told to John Bryja

The Oregon Coast is one of my favorite places in the world to hang out and ride waves. The natural beauty is stunning and with hundreds of miles of coastline full of beach and reef breaks, there’s plenty to explore. But some spots on the Oregon Coast can be fickle for wind, so it’s kind of like a box of chocolates.

I spend summers in Hood River, Oregon so I’ll load up my truck with boards and kites and head out to the coast whenever there’s a swell with wind. It’s rare when I’m actually there to catch a big fall or winter swell, so l usually just take boards for small to medium size surf.

Oregon Coast board quiver:

-6’0” North WAM. This is my most used board. I can set it up as a quad or a thruster so it’s really versatile. It’s great for nearly any conditions.

-5’7” Whip. I use this board when the waves are small and I want to have a board that makes the most of the conditions. This board is much fun for doing airs and tight little snaps.

-6’2” Kontact. I only ride this board if it’s big and bumpy. If I am on the Kontact, I most likely use it with foot straps. This board is all about control and speed when you need it.
2011 North Rebel Oregon Coast kite quiver:
-5m, 7m and 9m Rebel. The Rebel is pretty much my kite of choice for riding waves everywhere. I usually ride hooked-in so I like a kite that de-powers really quickly and still turns while the bar is pushed away from me. The Rebel is lively and turns and flies really intuitively so you can always put it in the right spot quickly and effortlessly.
