The day started bright and early! 7am as we loaded the boats and headed over with 99 racers to the uninhabited island. As we waited for the wind to fill riders built fires hung out, had scavenger hunts and more….
Team Cabrinha was on a mission as Rob Douglas is all about Power and Speed. He influenced the whole team to race 11 meter kites across the 11 mile run back to land. Most racers were on 9 meter kites and 7 meter kites.
The new boys Daniel and Brandon hung on to their 11 meter kites as their 130 pound bodies were being towed at max speeds across the water. The smiles on the kids, as they finished was something to see as they blew by people on the downwind leg. Rob Douglas, Brian Lake and Myself got in front with the lead pack and battled. Rob exploded and kept on fighting but lost valuable ground. Brian and myself were battling for second as Johnny had a nice lead. Brian and I rounded the home stretch neck and neck and about 10 feet from the finish I stuck my nose in and cart wheeled across the water. It was so awesome…. Photo Finish!
We wasted no time going in to freestyle. As teammate Richey and I were up in the first heat. It was game on the two of us managed to put on a show and advance…. Not bad for the “Old Guys”. They tried to run a few more heats and the wind shut off and we went on hold….
That’s all for now….. Course racing tomorrow….. Damo
