2012 Liquid Force NRG Review

Apr 14, 2012

Author: SBC Kiteboard / Shane Thompson

Best in Class: Low-end Power
Size Tested: 12 m
Sizes Available: 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 LW, 16 LW m

A new model for 2012, the NRG combines low-end power with enhanced wind range and high-flying freestyle capability. The kite has four struts and an ultra flat canopy, which can generate formidable amounts of low-end power. The special bridle setup with a pulley on the wing tip and one on the leading edge allow for optimal power trimming, and enhances stability through the gusts. The Test Team was impressed with the low-end drive of the kite and the big lofty jumping capability. Great de-power on demand, and light-touch turn initiation kept the NRG in control with some concentrated flying. The turns were more pivotal and didn’t generate as much power as some of the fuller, wing-tipped freestyle kites in the group. The NRG is well-suited to riders who demand lots of power and prefer a kite that delivers extra power instantly. The NRG also rocketed upwind, and its keen sheeting ability let testers find the perfect upwind drive. Water relaunch was a cinch for the NRG, and its flat canopy added loft, float and distance to boosts. It took some practise to get the timing of the flat arc to boost into the perfect lift and float, but some time spent with the NRG will pay off in big-time, old-school danglers. Board-offs, here we come!

Smooth but slower turn speed
If you’re used to more snappy and playful turning, NRG’s has comparatively smooth and responsive initiation, but slower turn finish.

“Not a park-and-fly kite; you gotta fly it to get the most out of it, and the rewards are big low-end, big lofty jumps and tons of range.”
“I like a kite that has a ton of power and range so I can boost to the moon, and the NRG does just that.”
