Somewhere on a small, densely populated island on the Indian Ocean, an American-born photographer who lives for surfing and kitesurfing finishes loading the latest TDZ clip (Surfing With Strangers) on his laptop. Two of his Candian friends—one a pro surfer from Tofino and the other a major cog in the surf industry—sit on the couch playing old-school Playstation 2 NHL Hockey. Neither of his friends give kitesurfing much thought, throwing the odd “roller bladders of the sea” jab at him from time to time. He waits for them to finish their game, as there is a substantial wager on the outcome. Finally he says, “Hey, you gotta check out this new clip my friends from home made.” And assuming he was talking about surfing, he gains their collective attention and focus. They sit stunned as they watch TDZ’s latest two-minute clip, Surfing With Strangers. Besides the odd “what the fuck?” they sit in near silence. As the video ends, he looks at their faces to get an idea of what they think. One says immediately with a smile, “I gotta learn to kite. That was sick!” The other casually hits the start button on the PS2, anxious to avenge his loss. As the game loads, he proceeds to tell me about a time Josh Mulcoy was kitesurfing in their town, destroying the blown out waves. He smiles and says, “Yeah, I want to try that, too.” —Jason Wolcott
